Challenge

Trulia, part of the Zillow Group, develops mobile and web tools for home buyers, sellers, renters, and agents. Through apps and web products, Trulia provides information and insights about houses, neighborhoods, and the real estate process, and connects home buyers with agents.

Trulia’s consumer products team, based in San Francisco, engaged Designing Insights to develop, facilitate, and run a product design sprint modeled on the Google Ventures Design Sprint. Design sprints have their foundation in design thinking, but are less focused on the theory and mindsets of design thinking and more on the development of real-world products.

Approach

Trulia teamWe assembled a diverse team of contributors, including mobile designers, product managers, software engineers, user experience researchers, and sales executives in Trulia’s San Francisco office.

Customers were recruited and interviewed on-site, pain points and new opportunities were identified, team members sketched and wire-framed new product solutions, and rapid prototypes were tested with real users.

Impact

Team members are now running their own design sprints for various projects. In addition to increased team confidence around facilitating and running future design sprint, the impact of our design sprint included:

  • New data around consumer interests and behaviors
  • Viable new product features and ideas
  • Improved collaboration between the design, engineering, and product management teams
